Cast Metal Bas Relief Plaques

These
plaques are popular because they tell the story like no other method
can. Imagery is sculptural, not flat. "Bas" is a French word
meaning "low", as opposed to "high relief" or "full round",
as a
free-standing statue is. The image on a bas relief plaque undulates,
distinct from the two-level portrayal (base level plus raised) on a flat
relief. Two primary ways of creating a bas-relief
plaque:
1) Modeled seals, where the entire plaque is a bas-relief, and
2) The relief is attached to the background plaque.
Sculptors use photographs to model a dimensional clay image of the
subject. Once sculpture is approved, a sand mold is made and then cast in
metal. Most commonly associated with portraits, bas-reliefs also well
depict buildings, historical vignettes & logos. Although we can use almost
any quality photograph, the better the image the better the modeling.
Remember, the finished image will be an artist's interpretation of the
photograph. You have the ability to make alterations you'd like to see,
even "improve on history".

This is a plaque we did back in 2005. It is a
tribute to the renowned, accomplished, beloved and visionary Gaylord
Nelson. Dubbed "The Man from Clear Lake", Nelson was an American
Democratic politician from Wisconsin. He was the principal founder of
Earth Day (hence the Ivy Leaf border). In 1970, he called for
Congressional hearings on the safety of combined oral contraceptive
pills. As a result of the hearings, side-effect disclosure was
required for the pill in patient inserts – the first such disclosure
for a pharmaceutical drug.
Within the year we also did the Burleigh Grimes plaque seen
below, for the same Wisconsin customer. Grimes was another WI favorite
son and American professional baseball player, and the last pitcher
officially permitted to throw the spitball. He was elected to the
Baseball Hall of Fame in 1964.
